The Melbourne Cup
Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight. Melbourne Cup Day follows a big day of racing on the previous Saturday, but if the weather is fine and the going is no worse than Dead the track is usually still in very good condition. The 3200m start is in a chute at the left hand side of the course leading in to the home straight. Maximum field is 24 runners with no emergencies. Barriers of little importance due to the distance involved. Difficult to lead all the way, fitness and weight are critical factors in the concluding stages.
